Sixty-six days is a study median, not a promise or a required streak.

Plain-date semantics · start date is not counted unless the result explicitly says inclusive.

Your result
100% of planned opportunities logged

The original daily-behavior study found a 66-day median to reach a modeled automaticity plateau, with a very wide 18–254 day range. It did not establish a universal deadline or a required perfect streak.

Context matters.

  • Track whether the action feels more automatic in the same context; calendar time and completion rate alone cannot prove a habit has formed.
  • A missed opportunity does not erase prior learning. Resume at the next cue instead of treating the tracker as an all-or-nothing streak.
  • Use professional support when the behavior concerns addiction, eating disorders, self-harm, medication or another health condition.

Questions answered

What to know before using the result.

Does it always take 66 days to form a habit?

No. The original study's modeled median was 66 days, with a range of 18–254 days. The researcher has explicitly cautioned against treating 66 as a universal rule.

Why track opportunities instead of a perfect streak?

Habit learning comes from repeating a behavior in a stable context. One missed opportunity does not erase prior learning, so completion and cue consistency are more useful than an all-or-nothing streak.

Can the calculator prove a habit is automatic?

No. Calendar time and completion rate cannot measure automaticity. Use the review to notice whether the behavior occurs with less conscious effort in the same context.
